How to choose carpet?

When picking the right carpet for your space, there are many things  to consider. Certain carpets are recommended for specific applications. The following factors will help you choose what you are looking for in a carpet:

  • Durability and foot traffic
  • Padding
  • Maintenance
  • Fiber Type (Polyester vs. Nylon)
  • Style
  • Application
  • Color
  • Price and budget

Carpet is soft, comfortable, insulates your space and comes in many styles such as plush, Saxony, Berber, textured and frieze. Although these terms are applicable to its pile, which is the exterior or surface you see. The pile is created from yarn tufts that are either folded over into loops, cut straight across or both. While each form has a particular look, it shouldn’t be your main element for consideration. Rather, focus on how well your lifestyle fits with a distinctive carpet style. Plush carpeting, for example, is made from a tightly twisted pile, which is thick, soft and attractive. However, it also reveals footprints and vacuum tracks, and can emerge into something called “pooling,” or sections that appear darker because the normal flow of the carpet fibers has been reversed. Saxony, the most common type of carpeting, is similar to plush.  These carpet styles work well in low-traffic spaces of a home like the formal living rooms and master bedrooms.

Berber carpeting, on the other hand, is made from continuous fiber loops that are flat and dense. It can have a level loop, cut-and-loop or multi-level loop look. All of these features mean Berber is exceptionally long-lasting and doesn’t show tracks, soil and stains. It is truly the perfect carpet for high-traffic areas, or places used by kids and animals or lots of traffic.

Contrary to other flooring types, carpet can be a natural insulator. Carpets will surprisingly warm your space and possibly reduce your utility costs. If you include cushion under your carpet, its thermal properties are even stronger. A carpet pad will produce a carpet that feels softer and it will expand its useful life. In addition, any carpet life can be prolonged by upgrading the pad. Carpets can also be used as an effective noise barrier. Carpets absorb and hold sound, making your space quieter.

Carpet Tiles

If you are searching for a better, more reliable option for carpet, you should think about the benefits of carpet tiles. This type of carpet is very popular in commercial spaces for the benefits of its flexibility paired with the comforts of carpet.
  • Easy Installation - Carpet tiles are easy to pick up, and replace if needed. Generally, their size and efficiency provides less waste during installation.
  • Easy Maintenance - While constant vacuuming and periodic deep cleanings are still necessary for this kind of carpet there are visible differences in the maintenance of regular carpet and carpet tiles. Broken tiles can be removed and replaced with your extra stock tiles rather than cutting out and patching that is a must for rolling regular carpet.
  • Extreme Durability - Not all types of carpet offer the same toughness, but there are some options of carpet tiles that protect against wear and tear that have a prolonged life expectancy.
  • Design Flexibility - Carpet tiles offer the ability of design freedom in the patterns and configurations that can be created upon installation.
